Sahlgrenska Life integrated healthcare environment

Sahlgrenska Life is creating one of the most advanced healthcare and life science environments in the Nordics, bringing together healthcare, research, academia and industry in one integrated district.

The project spans multiple buildings and functions, where critical healthcare activities, laboratory environments and academic activities must operate side by side. This creates a high level of technical and operational complexity.

Across the first development phases (Life 1–3), the project covers more than 120,000 m² of facilities, including approximately 62,000 m² in the first building and more than 60,000 m² in subsequent phases.

The challenge for the client is not only to build modern facilities, but to ensure that the systems supporting them remain functional and adaptable over time. Healthcare environments change continuously, with new treatments, technologies and workflows emerging over decades.

Ramboll has contributed with multidisciplinary engineering, including the design of ventilation, heating, sanitation and medical gas systems, as well as energy and monitoring solutions.

In an environment that includes functions such as laboratory medicine, emergency care, surgery and intensive care, system reliability is essential for daily operations.

The approach has focused on designing infrastructure that is both robust and flexible, so that the hospital can adapt to changing demands without disrupting operations. This reduces long-term risk and supports predictable performance.
