ABM 2.0: Ramboll updates the Americas Biodiversity Metric to expand its scope

The metric now includes comprehensive habitat data across most of North America, helping decisionmakers achieve measurable nature net positive outcomes for new developments and land use changes.

The Americas Biodiversity Metric (ABM) 2.0 is an update and expansion to the free biodiversity quantification tool that Ramboll launched in April 2024 to provide an innovative approach to biodiversity assessment in the United States.

The ABM was adapted from the Natural England Biodiversity Metric and developed with support and guidance from NatureServe, a leading non-profit focused on biodiversity in North America.

ABM 1.0 focused on habitats in the Northeastern US, including New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania; ABM 2.0 is an update and major expansion to include comprehensive habitat data for the entire US, Canada, and northern Mexico.

With this expanded scope, Ramboll seeks to provide unparalleled insights into habitat value to enable better ecological planning and sustainable development decisions across North America.

“The very first of its kind for North America, the ABM provides an innovative approach to biodiversity assessment. The expanded scope of this updated version offers unparalleled insights into habitat value, enabling better ecological planning and sustainable development decisions across the region,” says Daniel Rockefeller, Biodiversity Metrics US Lead.

ABM 2.0 sits alongside the Global Biodiversity Metric (GBM) in Ramboll’s suite of tools designed to support companies in making informed decisions throughout land use planning and development siting processes.

With these metrics, decisionmakers can ensure that designs for new developments and land-use changes achieve measurable net positive outcomes for nature.
