Project Porten was a comprehensive transformation of Stockholm Arlanda Airport’s Terminal 5, in which Ramboll contributed to improving operational efficiency and passenger experience while maintaining full airport functionality throughout the multi-year project.

Ramboll has played a pivotal role in transforming Stockholm Arlanda Airport’s Terminal 5 through the ambitious Project Porten. Over an eight-year span from 2017 to 2025, the project delivered a seamless extension and refurbishment while keeping the airport fully functional. Encompassing approximately 30,000 square metres of new construction and 25,000 square metres of renovation, the programme enhanced security, streamlined passenger flows, and expanded commercial zones to elevate both operational efficiency and passenger experience.

Key transformations included the creation of new commercial areas, installation of 27 advanced security control stations, and refurbishment of the central building, Passage, and Pier F with connectivity improvements towards Pier G. The newly integrated marketplace and food and beverage outlets have created a brighter, welcoming environment. The cohesive design services provided by Ramboll, excluding architecture managed by Tengbom, encompassed multidisciplinary engineering solutions across construction, electrical, mechanical, and fire safety.

Upgrading in a live aviation environment required careful coordination and collaboration to ensure minimal disruption to passengers and businesses. The reconstructions took place at various locations at the airport, including a new separate VIP Terminal designed by Ramboll. Ramboll’s efforts have resulted in a future-ready Terminal 5, poised to adapt to evolving security standards and operational requirements.

"The complexity of delivering in an active aviation environment required exceptional coordination and close collaboration with the design team and airport owner Swedavia to minimize disruption for passengers and operational activities. Robust planning and good collaboration were key to maintaining seamless passenger flows and operational flexibility throughout the delivery and into future operations,” says Henrik Brandén, Ramboll.
