Greater Copenhagen Light Rail: Connecting communities and supporting growth
Copenhagen is one of Europe’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions, with more than one million people living and working along the city’s Ring 3 road corridor. The Greater Copenhagen Light Rail has been developed to strengthen connections between the city’s outer neighbourhoods, providing sustainable mobility and supporting urban growth.
The double-track line will stretch 29 kilometres from Lundtofte in the north to Ishøj in the south, serving 29 stations across 11 municipalities. Linking key residential, business, and educational hubs with existing S-train and regional rail services, the light rail is expected to serve over 14 million passengers annually by 2030.
A catalyst for urban development
The new line will cut carbon emissions and alleviate road congestion, offering residents and commuters a frequent and attractive alternative to car use.
Beyond improving mobility, the light rail is designed to act as a catalyst for urban development. Municipalities along the line are planning new housing, workplaces, and services around the stations, fostering growth, and making the metropolitan area more liveable, accessible, and competitive.
Comprehensive consultancy services
Ramboll, in a joint venture with Arup, has led the consultancy services for the transportation system, covering all aspects from concept design and environmental impact assessment to tendering, construction support, and operation and maintenance strategies.
Our role spans the full range of disciplines required for a modern light rail system: permanent way, rolling stock, traction power, signalling, passenger information, security, and SCADA systems, and the Control and Maintenance Centre.
By bringing international best practices, advanced engineering, and a focus on lifecycle cost efficiency, Ramboll is helping to ensure that the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail is a safe, reliable, and future-ready addition to the capital’s public transport network.
