Mishka Makani

I believe great engineers are shaped by the people they learn from, and at Ramboll, I’ve been fortunate to work with supportive and experienced colleagues. I joined Ramboll in 2022 as a Building Services Engineering Degree Apprentice while studying for my BEng in Building Services Engineering. Early on, a Principal Engineer mentored me, explaining design decisions, reviewing my work, and involving me in meetings and site visits, across multiple projects. This balance of responsibility and encouragement to think independently, together with necessary guidance, was crucial in building my technical understanding and confidence and allowed me to build real engineering experience early on, seamlessly combining academic learning with meaningful project work.

Balancing full-time work and studying has been challenging but rewarding. This experience has made me a stronger engineer, enhanced my learning and communication skills, encouraged initiative, and provided me with the responsibility of managing my own projects.

As I progressed, I took on more responsibility, managing my own projects and delivering significant elements of larger schemes. These opportunities have developed my communication skills, project leadership, and coordination abilities. The wider team environment has also been invaluable, exposing me to diverse approaches and strengthening my professional judgment. Working in different teams within Ramboll and coming across new project types and disciplines has greatly broadened my experience, contributing to my professional and personal development.

Ramboll has played a key role in supporting my career journey by offering a balance of responsibility, learning opportunities, and guidance. I’ve been trusted with real project work and given increasing responsibility, with consistent support from managers and colleagues. Working towards my professional registration, Ramboll helped me prepare and supported my interest in data centre design by integrating me into this new team.

What I enjoy most about Ramboll is the trust and responsibility, the opportunities to contribute to projects and take ownership, which have accelerated my development. In addition, the flexible working environment allows me to manage my workload effectively, combining personal responsibility with robust support.
