I joined Ramboll in 2021 as a Structural Design Engineer in Ramboll’s Cambridge office. Before this, I had spent four years in the construction industry, working as a Site Manager and Digital Engineer. After gaining experience in Life Sciences and Pharma projects, modular construction, and a few refurbishment projects, I applied for chartership and successfully passed my professional review at the end of 2022.

My drive to deepen my technical expertise and further my interest in the digital side of engineering, led me to discover the Data Science apprenticeship at Ramboll. This seemed the perfect place and opportunity for making better use of data within engineering while continuing to enhance my skill set and develop tools that set me apart.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the apprenticeship was having dedicated time for learning new skills, something often difficult to achieve alongside working priorities. The programme also offered valuable insights into the workings of AI and the power of data, while exploring the challenges of applying complex machine learning concepts to real-life problems.

The apprenticeship was a deep dive into the world of machine learning, and being familiar with popular AI tools has enabled me to guide colleagues on their implementation, ensuring we maximise potential.

In addition, the programming skills I gained have broad applications within engineering, extending far beyond the data science focus of the apprenticeship. One of my recent projects has been to automate progress reports, which has already proved to be very useful. My goal now is to scale this across the wider Ramboll business to share its benefits.

Reflecting on my apprenticeship experience at Ramboll, I have not only developed and refined my technical abilities but also been empowered to drive innovation, highlighting the deep impact of a supportive, flexible environment on both individual growth and business success.
