Waste to Energy
Thermal treatment of waste has been our field of expertise for more than 50 years. Today we are a globally renowned engineering consultant within waste-to-energy.
When impossible to recycle, residual waste becomes a valuable local source of energy
In the circular economy, waste is a resource. One way to use this resource smartly is as a source of secure, stable and climate-friendly energy. In this way, energy from waste plays an important part of the waste hierarchy by making use of waste that cannot be avoided or recycled, reducing the need for fossil fuels and landfilling.
Having worked on waste-to-energy projects in 55 countries and provided consulting engineering services for close to 200 new units and retrofits, Ramboll is internationally recognised as the world-leading waste-to-energy engineering consultant.
We have obtained this position throughout a long list of more than 2,500 significant waste-to-energy projects, where we have been responsible for the planning, engineering, procurement or contract management of new waste-to-energy facilities.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can be implemented, so waste-to-energy becomes CO2 neutral. Learn more about our CCS services.
On source segregated organic waste and anaerobic digestion projects, we advise from pre-studies to final design, tendering, and commissioning of new facilities. Discover more about our bioenergy offerings.

FEATURED PROJECTS
A 10-year partnership between Ramboll and Copenhagen-based utility pushes the envelope for carbon capture, circular economy, and energy from waste, at the world's most efficient waste-to-energy plant.
What can be gained from mixing waste and used water? In Singapore, the answer is a first-of-its-kind Integrated Waste Management Facility that can handle up to 2.5 million tonnes of waste annually.
The facility is the largest of its kind in the Middle East and will set a benchmark in the region where around 150 million tonnes of waste is generated annually.
We're the Owner's Engineer for Australia’s first large-scale waste-to-energy facility in Kwinana. The facility will power up to 58,000 homes and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 460,000 tonnes annually.
The facility will divert up to 700,000 tonnes of municipal waste from landfill and generate low-carbon heat and power from non-recyclable waste. This will reduce CO2 emissions by 215,000 tonnes annually.
