Bridge engineering
Designing resilient and sustainable bridges that connect communities, enable economic growth and minimise environmental impact through world-class engineering expertise.

From iconic crossings like the Øresund Bridge and Queensferry Crossing to complex viaducts, Ramboll delivers innovative bridge engineering and bridge design solutions that balance performance, safety and sustainability.
Bridges are critical links that connect communities and support economic and social development. They face challenges from ageing assets, climate change, sustainability targets and increasing traffic demands. All these factors set a high bar for both existing and new structures. At Ramboll, we help clients with these challenges by combining decades of international civil engineering bridge experience with advanced digital tools, lifecycle design and a strong focus on carbon reduction and sustainability.
Our multi-award winning team specialises in structural bridge design that integrates structural optimisation, climate resilience, biodiversity considerations and a strong architectural expression. By having close dialogues with clients, contractors and local stakeholders, we develop bridge solutions that optimise the total cost of ownership, minimise environmental footprint and improve social value for communities.
We differentiate ourselves through holistic design that integrates structural optimisation, climate resilience, biodiversity considerations and a strong architectural expression. By having close dialogues with clients, contractors and local stakeholders, we develop bridge solutions that optimise the total cost of ownership, minimise environmental footprint and improve social value for communities.
Ramboll supports bridge owners, operators and delivery partners with integrated expertise across the full lifecycle of bridge assets. We work across all major bridge types, from long-span suspension, cable-stayed and arch bridges to viaducts, rail, pedestrian/cycle and complex moveable bridges. Alongside new design, we are internationally recognised for bridge assessment and rehabilitation, including life-extension of existing bridges, helping clients maximise the value of their assets while reducing carbon, cost and disruption.

FEATURED PROJECTS
The Øresund Fixed Link promotes cultural and economic cooperation between Denmark and Sweden, standing as a testament to engineering excellence, environmental stewardship, and cross-border collaboration, while also incorporating a special consideration for nature.
The Queensferry Crossing is the world’s longest three-tower, cable-stayed bridge. It is a vital strategic link for eastern Scotland, improving reliability for 24 million vehicle users per year. We identified significant cost and carbon savings, including avoidance of 7,000 tonnes of embodied carbon.
Denmark's third largest bridge at around 4 kilometres across, the new bridge will have both regional and international importance. It will contribute to the rail corridor between Copenhagen and Germany.
Featuring a new 1 km six-lane cable-stayed toll bridge over the river Mersey and a further 1.2 km of raised approaches, the Mersey Gateway was the largest infrastructure project in the North-West of England and plays an integral part of the local Sustainable Transport Strategy.

What we offer
- :
Integrated Sustainable Solutions
Our value lies in combining advanced structural analysis, geotechnical and foundation engineering, wind and seismic engineering with digital design and assessment tools. By using BIM, parametric modelling alongside digital twins, we provide better decision-making during design and enable data-driven bridge asset management during operation. Early carbon benchmarking, low-carbon material selection and nature-inclusive design are all elements that we consider in sustainability.
- :
Procurement and Delivery Support
We also support clients throughout procurement and delivery, advising on construction strategies and methodologies that reduce programme risk and improve safety, including off-site manufacture, incremental launching and balanced cantilever construction.
- :
Bridge Excellence
Whether acting as lead designer, independent checker or owner’s engineer, Ramboll works in close partnership with clients and project teams to deliver robust, adaptable bridge solutions that extend asset life, optimise total cost of ownership and create lasting value for users and communities.
