Santa Claus Village sought to reduce waste, increase material circulation and improve resource utilisation among companies operating in Santa Claus Village. Ramboll assisted Santa Claus Village on its circularity ambitions by developing a practical circular economy action plan that engaged the cooperative's companies, the city of Rovaniemi and the surrounding rural areas. This approach not only supports sustainable resource management but also fosters resilient and liveable communities by encouraging innovative solutions and collaborative efforts.

The project scope included developing a recycling system with specialist support and funding, providing training and guides on waste sorting for both staff and tourists, coordinating recycling points, and piloting projects to swiftly implement circular economy measures.

Workshops were conducted with good tools and clear communication, supported by a compact project team to ensure straightforward execution. Multiple stakeholders, including public administrative entities, companies and rural operators, were engaged in the process to ensure comprehensive implementation. This collaborative approach helps build resilient infrastructures and supports the creation of sustainable and liveable environments.

Significant achievements and collaborative success

The results of the project were significant, with a practical circular economy action programme developed that outlined specific roles and tasks for public administrative entities, cooperative companies and countryside operators. Key themes of the programme included resource-efficient waste management, communication and branding of the circular economy, energy efficiency, renewable energy and smart solutions.

Collaboration was a cornerstone of the project, involving substantial contributions from the city of Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village Cooperative and rural operators. Notable achievements included successful implementation of circular economy measures within the companies and the generation of new ideas and discussions that promoted a shared vision for sustainability.

Santa Claus Village and Ramboll had previously worked on similar development projects, ensuring established methods were put into practice effectively. This project exemplifies Ramboll's dedication to sustainability, fostering resilient communities and promoting sustainable, liveable environments through practical solutions. It highlights successful collaboration and innovation at one of Finland's most iconic tourist destinations.
