Tackle air pollution and pave the way for a healthier and sustainable future
Meet Madeleine, who shares how her work on air quality assists clients in resolving their most challenging problems.
Industrial emissions and increased traffic congestion are some factors that contribute to more adverse air quality issues. Awareness on the health impacts from localised air pollution is increasing, and communities are looking to take action to clear the air.
Meet Madeleine Behn, Environmental Consultant in Sydney, Australia, who is passionate about air quality and works to apply cutting-edge science and methodologies to tailor-make solutions for facility, local, and regional air quality challenges.
“Climate change action in Australia needs to start now. It is a great experience to work at Ramboll, where our multidisciplinary expertise helps clients address environmental impacts of some of the toughest global problems.”
Q: Can you tell us about your role in Ramboll?
Madeleine: I joined Ramboll 2 years ago as part of the Air Quality Management team in Ramboll’s Environment and Health division. Our team assists clients across the various industries on a range of topics, including but not limited to emissions estimation, air dispersion modeling, human health risk assessment, climate change, sustainability initiatives, permitting, and compliance.
In my role, I use measurements of air quality at different sites as well as measured and estimated meteorology and emission information to determine if pollution levels will cause harm to human health or ecological habitats. The type of analysis can range from statistical and wind component analysis to modelling using systems such as CALPUFF or AERMOD.
Q: How would you describe the impact on managing air quality that you and your team make?
Madeleine: Air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to health. The work that we do here at Ramboll is meaningful as we collaborate with clients to deliver positive health, environmental and economic outcomes for the community. We provide a comprehensive service relating to modelling, monitoring and assessment of air quality, covering a range of air pollutants that affect health and ecosystems, as well as dusts and odours that affect amenity.
Our work with clients adopts a multifaceted approach to the problem and tackle it at every possible angle, leading to a visible reduction in air pollution and a major improvement in the society’s quality of life.
Q: Could you talk about a project/or achievement that you are most proud of?
I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects as part of the Australian air quality team. One standout project involved a multidisciplinary baseline gap analysis for a rare metal exploration on a remote Indonesian island. My role focused on conducting an air quality impact assessment, which included developing an emissions inventory, modeling multiple scenarios, and assessing cumulative impacts from nearby projects. The pollutant concentrations at sensitive receptor locations were compared to both national and international standards, leading to the identification of specific mitigation measures for the island. These recommendations were shared with stakeholders, contributing to enhanced air quality management and a healthier airshed.
Q: What are some actions you take as an individual for cleaner air?
Madeleine: It is one of our major responsibilities to protect our environment. There are various small steps that we can all take to do our part. As for myself, preventive measures I take include taking public transport to work, walking where possible and carpooling with friends. I have a passion for slow fashion and try to thrift where possible.
As part of the Care Ambassador team, a volunteer group of Ramboll employees who come together to develop initiatives and events that promote a caring and sustainable culture, I organised a clothing drive in collaboration with Dress for Success where our employees can donate their unused work clothes to go to a better home. Contributing to the circular economy. I advocate for green spaces and host a variety of plants in my own home.
With proactive steps, we can work together towards cleaner air for a healthier future.
Q: What do you enjoy the most about working with Ramboll?
Madeleine: I was initially attracted to Ramboll because of its global presence and sustainable targets. I value purpose-driven work and Ramboll’s commitment to sustainability is a key factor that draws me to work here. In my role, I am provided with opportunities to work on a wide range of different projects with the chance to collaborate with various other teams across disciplines and regions. The autonomy and trust given by the company motivates me and promotes a strong sense of belonging, allowing me to contribute my best ideas. Most importantly, it is extremely rewarding to see the results of my work making a positive impact in the communities.
