The West Link, unlocking Gothenburg’s rail capacity for the future

Gothenburg is one of Scandinavia’s busiest transport hubs, but its rail network has long struggled with limited capacity. To address this, the Swedish Transport Administration is building the West Link (Västlänken), an eight-kilometre railway through three stations that will reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and provide a more efficient commuting experience.

    Design alignment

As main designer for the Haga station, Ramboll delivered more than 50 structural design packages covering tunnels, platforms, and technical rooms. Shared 3D models were used as a common reference across all stakeholders to align on design intent, interfaces, and sequencing. This digital approach supported coordination across disciplines and informed decision-making throughout construction.

The West Link is being delivered beneath central Gothenburg using a combination of cut and cover and bored tunnel construction, allowing the city to remain functional throughout the works. As a design partner, Ramboll contributes to the design of underground structures, tunnel elements, and access points along the route, while coordinating interfaces, managing traffic, and mitigating noise and vibration to protect residents, businesses, and historic surroundings.
