Karlstad Central Hospital transformation and emergency building

Central Hospital in Karlstad (CSK) is undergoing a major transformation to meet future healthcare needs while continuing to provide everyday care.

The project is one of the most comprehensive healthcare developments in Sweden, combining new construction with refurbishment across an operational hospital campus. It includes several building projects, with the new Emergency Building as the central component.

The Emergency Building will span approximately 90,000 m² across seven floors and will accommodate the majority of the hospital’s acute-care functions.

In parallel, additional buildings such as the 14,800 m² outpatient facility and other infrastructure upgrades are being implemented as part of a long-term development programme.

The core challenge for the client is not only to deliver new healthcare facilities, but to do so while maintaining uninterrupted operations in an active hospital environment.

Ramboll contributes with electrical and telecommunications design, supporting both new construction and refurbishment across the campus. The work includes detailed design for several parts of the project and ongoing design development for the Emergency Building.

This requires careful coordination of interfaces between new and existing systems. Solutions must ensure that hospital operations can continue safely and predictably throughout the entire transformation.
