The Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) has identified the need to transform Singapore's event infrastructure, replacing the former floating platform at Marina Bay with a new landmark stadium. Designed to host the National Day Parade, concerts, football matches, and other major events, NS Square represents a new chapter in Singapore's civic and cultural identity. As the project's transport and crowd flow planners, Ramboll's core objectives were to study the stadium's impact on pedestrian movement and visitor access, understand its demand during peak events, and propose a holistic circulation strategy that integrates security, accessibility, and the visitor experience — including seamless access to the new NS Gallery, which showcases Singapore's military history.

Planning for a Landmark of National Significance

The complexities of designing crowd flow for one of Singapore's most prominent public venues required close collaboration and coordination with relevant agencies. Working together, we developed a pedestrian masterplan through exhaustive studies that include extensive data collection, surveys, pedestrian simulation modelling for major events, and process space design based on forecast visitor demand.

A Venue Built for the Future

With the adoption of our circulation design, the right steps were taken towards creating a secure, efficient, and welcoming venue. The resulting architectural layout accommodates 30,000 spectators, incorporates an adequate number of on-site security scanners, and delivers a shorter travel journey from entry to seating compared to the previous facility — eliminating the need for off-site screening. Ramboll continued to provide support through detailed refinements, and with the project advancing steadily, the vision of a truly world-class, people-centred stadium has never been more achievable.
