Nima Drain, Ghana

Improving liveability in Accra with sustainable water management

Improving liveability in Accra with sustainable water management.

The 6.9-kilometre-long Nima Drain is a key part of Accra’s water drainage system designed to channel out the capital’s stormwater. Cutting through Nima’s low-income housing settlements, the reinforced concrete box drain has over the years become a dumping ground choked with solid waste and effluent, putting the adjacent neighbourhoods at risk of flooding and waterborne disease.

Henning Larsen’s revitalisation work introduces the design of a new green public domain. The project connects both sides of Nima through an expansive civic space for walking, cycling and other communal activities, transcending civil engineering functionality to create an Accra landmark of life and rejuvenation.
