Station Control / Protection Engineer - Power Systems

Are you an experienced Station Control engineer? Are you excited about participating in some of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe? Do you want to contribute actively to the green transition?

If this sounds like you, or you’re curious to learn more, then this role could be the perfect opportunity. Join our Power Systems Department as our new Station Control engineer and work with us to close the gap to a sustainable future.

Your new role- two separate role

Control Engineer

As our new Control Engineer, you will work on the development and implementation of control philosophies for substations and HV/MV networks. Your responsibilities will include defining and applying closed-loop and open-loop control strategies for substations and converter-based systems, covering both AC and DC applications. You will contribute across all project phases—from concept development and system studies to specification, design, procurement, testing, and commissioning. The role involves selection and integration of control hardware, interfaces with primary equipment, and close collaboration with protection, SCADA, and commissioning teams to deliver robust and reliable control solutions.

Protection Engineer

As our new Protection Engineer, you will be responsible for the concept, design, and coordination of AC and DC protection systems for substations and HV/MV networks, including converter-based installations. You will develop protection philosophies, perform protection coordination studies, and specify protection hardware and schemes aligned with grid codes and project requirements. Your work will span the full project lifecycle—from early concept and system definition to detailed design, testing, and commissioning—working closely with control, primary, and commissioning engineers to ensure safe, selective, and dependable protection solutions.

Your main responsibilities will be:

Control Engineer

  • Develop engineering specifications for plant and station control systems for substations in the 30–400 kV range, with a strong focus on closed-loop control for power electronic converter systems such as STATCOM and HVDC.
  • Design, configure, and maintain station and plant control architectures, including RTUs, PLCs, and protection relays from ABB, Siemens, and Sprecher, ensuring reliable integration with primary equipment and SCADA systems.
  • Develop and implement control philosophies and closed-loop control strategies for AC and DC systems, including dynamic performance, stability, and interaction with the power system.
  • Perform testing, validation, and commissioning of station and plant control systems using OMICRON test equipment, including factory and site acceptance testing.
  • Carry out modeling, simulation, and performance studies using PSCAD and MATLAB/Simulink to support control design, tuning, and verification for converter-based systems and substations.
  • Collaborate in multidisciplinary project teams, contributing across all project phases—from concept development and system studies to detailed design, construction, and hands-on commissioning.

Protection Engineer

  • Develop engineering specifications and detailed settings for AC protection systems and protection relays for substations in the 30–400 kV range, ensuring compliance with grid codes, selectivity, sensitivity, and reliability requirements. Design, configure, and coordinate AC protection schemes, including distance, differential, overcurrent, and backup protections, using protection relays from ABB, Siemens, and Sprecher, with robust integration to primary equipment.
  • Develop protection philosophies, protection settings, and protection coordination studies for both AC and DC systems, with a strong focus on DC protection coordination for converter-based installations such as HVDC and cSTATCOM. Define and apply protection concepts for DC faults, converter protection interfaces, and interaction between AC and DC protection systems.
  • Perform protection testing, validation, and commissioning activities, including protection relay configuration, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and on-site commissioning. Carry out protection studies, modeling, and simulations using tools such as PSCAD and MATLAB/Simulink to verify protection performance, coordination, and dynamic behavior in AC networks, HVDC systems, and STATCOM installations.
  • Collaborate closely with control, primary, and commissioning engineers in multidisciplinary project teams, contributing across all project phases—from concept development and system studies to detailed design, construction, and hands-on commissioning—to deliver safe, selective, and dependable protection solutions.
