Norra Hagastaden: Ramboll’s contribution to a vibrant sustainable district in Stockholm
Norra Hagastaden, known for its history and hospital developments, is transforming into a vibrant and sustainable district in Stockholm. Ramboll has been awarded the role of technical consultant in Region Stockholm’s long‑term development initiative, with the client Locum.

One of the region’s most extensive urban development projects
Norra Hagastaden is among the Stockholm region’s most extensive development efforts: a transformation from historical brick hospital buildings into a modern, integrated urban district with space for housing, healthcare operations and innovation. Ramboll contributes as technical consultant within Locum’s project organisation.
“We are very proud to contribute to this major development project together with Locum. We have collaborated in the area before, from early studies ahead of the modernisation to the implementation of Karolinska University Hospital. Ramboll is deeply committed to the development of the district, which makes it especially meaningful to support the next stage of its transformation,” says Anette Seger, Manager Director, Ramboll Sweden.
The development includes approximately 3,000 homes and 150,000 square metres of premises to be enabled over the coming decades. Ramboll’s assignment spans several parallel sub‑projects, from planning future streets, public squares and parks to technical supply systems and complex underground infrastructure that must be disconnected, upgraded or rebuilt. Some buildings will receive new functions, while others will be selectively demolished and reused.
Throughout the transformation, essential operations within the area must continue, adding to the project’s complexity.
“This places high demands on coordination, technical reliability and careful planning — something we feel fully equipped to handle. Our combination of broad and specialised expertise, along with our experience from multidisciplinary design in challenging urban environments, enables us to manage these parallel dimensions,” says Anette Seger, Manager Director, Ramboll Sweden.
Respecting the site's strong identity
The area boasts a unique historical identity, with its brick architecture, vital social functions, and intricate technical systems defining the project. As a technical consultant, Ramboll’s responsibility is to provide sustainable, resilient solutions in land use, infrastructure, and systems—solutions that preserve the area’s distinct heritage
“We look forward to contributing, together with Locum, to a safe, inclusive and sustainable district for people and businesses — always with respect for the site’s unique conditions,” says Anette Seger, Manager Director, Ramboll Sweden.
