Dubai: One of the world’s largest energy-from-waste facilities is coming to life

The AED 4 billion project, which will contribute to reaching the goals set by Dubai Municipality in minimizing the volume of municipal waste in landfills and developing alternative energy sources, represents one of the most significant renewable energy investments in the United Arab Emirates.

With a processing capacity of up to 45% of Dubai’s current municipal waste generation, the facility will convert 1.9 million tonnes of waste per year into approximately 200 MW of electricity to be fed into the local grid.

The design and construction of the facility will be undertaken under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by Hitachi Zosen Inova and BESIX.

In an Owner’s Engineer role, Ramboll is Dubai Waste Management Company’s representative and shall review all of the EPC contractor’s activities to ensure compliance with the contract.

We are excited to be part of this project, which will take Dubai in a greener direction,” says Project Manager from Ramboll Jan Teir.

The facility will be financed, designed, constructed, operated and maintained on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis by special purpose development vehicle Dubai Waste Management Company consisting of Dubai Holding, Dubal Holding, ITOCHU Corporation, Hitachi Zosen Inova, BESIX Group and Tech Group – under a 35-year concession period with Dubai Municipality.
