Job Description

To succeed in this role, you must have an excellent project execution background within Energy from Waste (EfW)/ Waste-to-Energy (WtE) or in Thermal power plant projects and be able to lead your project teams across Ramboll’s offices and geographies.

As our new WtE Expert in our EfW, Bio & Carbon Capture (CC) unit, you will be part of a growing team with highly experienced members. Our services include providing guidance to Project Developers and Investors on Energy from Waste technologies, regulations and limitations, working with technology providers to review engineering designs and project proposals, representing owners’ interests in developing technical specifications, managing technical aspects of EPC procurement and contracts, reviewing detailed designs of facilities being established, providing oversight of construction and commissioning activities. As a WtE Expert your most important role is to lead the multidisciplinary technical system solution, conducting projects of high quality and through this become a trusted advisor to our clients[insert a short description of maximum 4-5 lines about the department that the applicant will join; how many colleagues will he/she get? Your key tasks and responsibilities will be:
- Perform basic thermal and process engineering for Waste‑to‑Energy (WtE) plants, including incineration‑based energy recovery systems.
- Preparation of Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for complete WtE plant systems.
- Preparation and performance of sizing calculations for WtE plant equipment, including boilers, auxiliaries, and balance‑of‑plant systems.
- Knowledge of heat and mass balance calculations for complete WtE boiler and energy recovery packages.
- Preparing general arrangement drawings (elevation & plan) and layout diagrams for WtE plants with the support of drafting teams.
- Perform steam‑side and water‑side pressure drop calculations for WtE energy recovery systems.
- knowledge of waste combustion calculations, including fuel characterisation and thermal performance of WtE incinerators.
- Knowledge of waste handling systems, including refuse handling, incinerator bottom ash (IBA) systems, and mechanical rapping systems.
- Perform Flue Gas Treatment (FGT)–related calculations to support emissions control and regulatory compliance for WtE plants.
- Guiding clients on project cost estimation, project finance monitoring, and control for Waste‑to‑Energy projects.
- Strong knowledge of scope and cost change management for complex WtE infrastructure projects.
- Inter‑department coordination with engineering and competence teams involved in WtE project delivery.
- Attending project review meetings with clients and project stakeholders.
- Conducting site visits and guiding clients during on‑shore WtE project activities, including construction and commissioning phases.
- Attending technical review meetings with EPC contractors and sub‑suppliers for WtE projects.
- Visiting supplier factories for equipment inspection and technical evaluation of WtE plant equipment.
- IBR and ASME Calculation
- Performing design review and calculations for the Deaerator, Fans, pumps, SCAPH and other auxiliary systems.
- Experience in conducting technical bid evaluations and comparative assessments of vendor proposals.
Additional task will be:
- Use your knowledge and network to identify project opportunities.
- Build good working relations to other parts of the Ramboll family and draw on full service offering of complete organisation.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university (Master’s degree will be an added advantage).
- 15 years of experience in large‑scale industrial power projects, with strong exposure to Waste‑to‑Energy, and transferable experience in energy systems, combustion‑based plants, and related environmental technologies.
- Proven experience in project engineering, study execution, with demonstrated capability to independently facilitate and drive project Engineering activities.
- Strong technical competence to own and resolve complex engineering issues, either independently or by coordinating with internal teams, EPC contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrates a proactive attitude with a structured and analytical mindset, capable of working on multidisciplinary and technically demanding projects.
- Willingness to travel as per project requirements, including site visits, supplier inspections, and client meetings.
- Comfortable working with stakeholders across multiple time zones and geographies, and flexible to engage outside normal working hours based on Chennai time zone, as required by project needs.
