Additive manufacturing is playing an essential role in responding to the global COVID-19 pandemic due to the technology’s ability to overcome supply chain challenges by producing parts quickly, and in many cases, locally. The worldwide support for COVID-19 response now includes 3D printing of many critical components such as face shields, respirator masks and ventilator replacement parts.
Using our in-house 3D printing capabilities, Ramboll is collaborating with Budmen Industries, along with a large volunteer network led by film production company American High, in a global effort to produce, assemble and deliver 3D-printed face shields for healthcare workers at the front lines of this pandemic. Over 2,400 producers are being connected with healthcare organizations in their local community to minimize production time and cost.
To support the effort, experts at our Advanced Manufacturing Technology & Innovation Center in Liverpool, New York are part of this network using both 3D printing and injection molding to provide over 10,000 face shields to many healthcare organizations. Ramboll has donated all materials needed to make the parts, which are being produced using our large 3D production printer and a smaller external unit through a 24/7 printing operation.
Ramboll is also helping to connect healthcare professionals in need of face shields with this network and through these connections, thousands of face shields have been distributed to healthcare workers across New York State.
