Nature guide launch: ‘Nature and Biodiversity: a guide for development’
The guide by The Environmental Industries Commission (EIC), including Ramboll as a contributing author – is designed to bring together all nature policies to help non-nature professionals involved with development projects.
- In the last few years, an array of policies and regulations related to nature, biodiversity and green infrastructure have been introduced in the UK.
- Nature as a topic is complex; there is no singular metric, as there is for climate with carbon. As a result, the policies and regulations are complex.
- The aim of the guide is for developers, programme managers and major contractors to have an introduction to Biodiversity Net Gain (in England) and natural capital, and how these apply throughout a development project life cycle.
The guide is a holistic approach to nature and biodiversity. By providing a comprehensive overview, the guide aims to help readers achieve their key aims and objectives in a nature-positive way.
The guide includes four sections:
- Context and Key Concepts
- Embedding Nature and Biodiversity
- Biodiversity Net Gain and Natural Capital Throughout a Project Life Cycle
- Legal and Policy Overview
Vikki Patton - Nature Positive Services UK Lead at Ramboll, has contributed to ‘Embedding Nature and Biodiversity'. Below are some examples of how we rely on nature in business and for society.
With so much dependency on nature, it is clear to see how the ongoing decline of nature creates volatile trade markets and a vulnerable economy. The World Economic Forum estimates that 50% of the economy is threatened from biodiversity loss, with 80% of threatened species directly impacted by economic activity.
Vikki Patton says,
“Collaboration across industry is vital if we are going to truly deliver nature recovery. This guide will support developers, programme managers and contractors to deliver required regulations - but also delves into how those who lead the way and go beyond corporate responsibility will reap the economic and environmental benefits that come from protecting our natural environment.”
