Constructing science: free assessment model for UK lab space

A consortium of health, life sciences, engineering and construction consultants including Ramboll - has launched a first-of-its-kind, free-to-use dynamic model and building standards tool, that will tell you whether an existing or proposed lab building is suitable for the type of scientific work planned.

Constructing science consortium
By setting out a baseline for building quality labs, Constructing Science solves a significant problem facing the life sciences sector – a lack of readily accessible and universally agreed design and construction standards.
Although developers are working to fulfil the need for labs – either through new builds or repurposing existing structures – they cannot afford to build space that may not be fit for purpose because inaccurate or sub-standard specifications have been used.
The new diagnostic tool enables building owners and investors to collapse the process of building feasibility studies from months to minutes and provides much-needed clarity for the market by providing clear recommendations for high-quality lab space.
Rebecca Mortimore, UK Science Sector Co-Lead, says:
"Ramboll are proud to have been part of a cross-industry consortium that is collectively passionate about creating high quality spaces where life sciences can flourish.
We hope our design guidance and tool will assist designers, developers, operators and tenants in their assessment of laboratory facilities, as well as help demystify aspects of laboratory operation and design for new entrants to this exciting but potentially complex market."
Isabel McTiffin, Director, goes onto say:
"We are particularly proud to have led on the civil, structural and vibration engineering aspects that are critical to high performance facilities, and drew on our extensive experience and portfolio of life sciences projects to ensure the criteria meet the needs of a wide range of tenants whilst avoiding over-specification."
Ivana Poparic, head of life sciences cluster development at MedCity, said:
“This is a significant milestone in accelerating the demand for high-quality lab and R&D space in the capital and beyond. Helping owners and investors facilitate the creative and appropriate re-use of existing buildings will create significant carbon savings while limiting over-provision across buildings.”
Constructing Science is expected to play a key role in facilitating provision of fit-for-purpose lab space that meets the needs of prospective tenants, enabling the continued growth of UK life sciences. The consortium is made up of Ramboll, MedCity, EEDN, Gleeds, Cushman & Wakefield, Gensler, Buro Happold, Hoare Lea, CPC and Mission Street. Visit Constructing Science.
