Organised by the Institution of Structural Engineers, the IStructE Singapore Structural Awards celebrate excellence in structural design and significant contributions to the built environment.

Jessie Tan, Country Market Director for Buildings in Asia Pacific, said: “I am thrilled that our project has been recognised by the prestigious award. The project features many innovative aspects enhance sustainability and the social impact of the built environment. Our work was integral in achieving a harmonious integration of historic preservation with modern architecture and sustainable practices.”

“I would like to thank 8M Real Estate and WOHA Architects for the trust and great collaboration in bringing the transformative project to life. Ramboll’s work on this project underscores our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and design excellence, marking a significant achievement in Singapore’s building landscape.” Added Ms Tan.

The heritage building at 21 Carpenter Street has been transformed into a modern hotel, showcasing a harmonious blend of structural excellence, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.

The project preserves more than 80% of the original frame, significantly reducing material waste and minimizing environmental impact. Advanced engineering techniques, including prefabricated steel trusses and a “cut and carry” methodology, were utilised to minimise disruptions to both the existing structure and its surroundings. This innovative approach allowed for the careful integration of a 6-storey rear extension with an attic, preserving the heritage character of the shop houses while adding modern functionality.

Ramboll’s structural engineering solutions complied with stringent conservation regulations while enhancing the building’s resilience. The existing timber floors were replaced with steel composite slabs, and the foundation was strengthened using steel micro-piles, addressing both modern safety and serviceability requirements within the tight working spaces.

Ramboll has successfully delivered a number of sustainable building transformation projects in Singapore and globally, such as the Capella hotel in Singapore and 3 Sheldon Square in London.
