Gwen Caviness

Gwen Caviness is a health scientist with over 30 years of professional experience in the environmental field and human health risk assessment. Specific areas of emphasis include exposure analysis, risk-based property assessment, vapor intrusion, air toxics, strategic risk management planning, and risk communication.

Gwen has managed or performed human health risk assessments for over 300 contaminated sites which have included evaluation of a wide range of chemicals, media, and exposure pathways at sites under varied federal and state regulatory agencies. She specializes in per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, metals, and chlorinated solvents, including tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), and vinyl chloride. 

As a member of the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC) PFAS team, she led preparation of monthly updates of ITRC tables that summarize state and federal standards and guidance values for PFAS in water and soil. With extensive knowledge of federal and state guidance and policies on chemical exposures and risks, she supports both private and public sector clients in developing strategies to mitigate potential human health impacts and address related business risks.

She routinely presents technical information at client, agency and stakeholder meetings and provides risk communication support for clients at public hearings and community meetings. Gwen also provides expert technical services and support on Proposition 65 and environmental litigation matters. Gwen currently leads the Risk Assessment and Community Health department of the Health Sciences Group, Americas at Ramboll.
