Mining Sector Principal: Hydrogeologist, Engineer, Scientist or Regulatory Specialist - Canada

This role can be based in Vancouver, BC or Toronto, ON.

RAMBOLL has an opportunity for a Principal-level professional to join our team in Canada and to be an active member of our global mining team on a full-time, permanent basis.  We prefer candidates that are willing to work in Ramboll’s existing Canadian locations of Vancouver or Toronto, but would consider hybrid arrangements which include remote work from elsewhere in Canada with periodic visits to Ramboll’s office locations.

Our global mining team consists of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals with experience ranging from graduate level to 30 plus years of experience. This presents an opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues with different areas of technical expertise and to mentor more junior team members. We contribute to all parts of the mining life cycle, from exploration and pre-feasibility through to mine closure.

As a new Principal, you will join our Environment and Health team that supports clients with a wide range of environmental issues. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical and business leadership and contribute to advanced solutions in the mining sector. In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to generate and maintain a volume of business sufficient to support the growth of the firm. Typically, successful applicants generate at least enough business to support 2-3 staff members.

This individual will have experience managing consulting assignments, must work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams, is expected to be proficient in the analysis and communication of information, and must be able to work cooperatively with agencies, organizations, and individuals to guide decision-making. The successful candidate also is expected to be proficient in all facets of project management. He/she must demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and developing staff and collaboration with colleagues throughout the Practice.

This role is predominantly within the mining business, with the potential to also work with other local sectors including energy, advanced manufacturing, resource development, and circular economy.

Your key responsibilities as a Principal will include:

  • Client Engagement: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, building and maintaining strong relationships. Understand their environmental consulting needs, develop tailored solutions, and provide exceptional client service.
  • Project Management: Lead and manage environmental consulting projects from initiation to completion, ensuring deliverables are met within budget and timeline constraints. Supervise project teams, allocate resources effectively, and maintain project documentation.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date with Canadian federal, provincial, and local environmental regulations, as well as regulations in relevant international mining jurisdictions, and ensure that consulting projects adhere to all applicable laws and guidelines. Advise clients on compliance requirements and help in obtaining necessary permits.
  • Risk Assessment and Management: Identify and assess environmental risks associated with client projects. Develop risk management strategies and help clients in implementing effective measures to mitigate risks and ensure environmental compliance.
  • Environmental Permitting: Assist clients in navigating the regulatory permitting process, including obtaining permits for activities such as air emissions, wastewater discharge, wetland impact, and hazardous waste management.
  • Sustainability Consulting: Provide expertise in sustainability practices and help clients develop and implement sustainable strategies. Advise on energy efficiency, waste management, water conservation, and other sustainability initiatives.
  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of environmental consultants, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities. Foster a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
  • Business Development: Identify new business opportunities, prepare proposals, and participate in client presentations. Expand the client base and maintain a strong network of industry contacts to generate business leads.
  • Thought Leadership: Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in the environmental consulting field. Contribute to industry forums, publish articles, and deliver presentations to establish the organization as a thought leader.

Your key technical contributions to the global mining team should be:

  • Deliver consulting services in the areas of conceptual model development, mine dewatering and mine water management, environmental impact assessments for the resource industry and water supply work.
  • Assist in the management of groundwater studies including design and implementation of groundwater monitoring programs, planning and supervision of aquifer testing programs, groundwater modelling studies and groundwater inflow assessments for pit and underground mines.
  • Mentor junior staff to support their career development, technical excellence and commercial awareness.
  • Project based travel and site work, working away both in Canada and internationally. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client need.
  • Contribute to multi-disciplinary project teams on local, regional and international consulting projects, so they are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to client and RAMBOLL's standards.
