Geophysical surveys

Geophysics is the study of the physical condition of the earth, sea and atmosphere. Ramboll primarily applies geophysical methods in the fields of public building and construction, groundwater and the environment, marine constructions and buried objects.

Geophysical methods

Geophysical methods help us to identify geological, geotechnical and hydrological parameters in drillings, along profiles and on surfaces. By using geophysical surface methods we can estimate the physical condition of the earth or seabed in 2D or 3D models and link drillings and cone penetration test (CPT) data for example, to the geophysical model.

We carry out all types of geophysical studies. However, our primary fields of expertise are:

  • Seismic, including reflection and refraction
  • Marine studies
  • Logging of drilling holes and Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP)
  • Transient electromagnetic sounding (TEM) studies
  • CVES (Continuous Vertical Electrical Sounding ) or Multi Electrode Profiling (MEP) studies
  • Airborne geophysical methods – SkyTEM and Helicopter electromagnetic (HEM) surveys
  • Georadar surveys
  • Geodesy
  • Metal detector – EM61
  • Other fields of expertise such as gravimetry

Our geophysical studies are based on the analysis and interpretation of field measurements. The quality of the field measurements is decisive for the end result.

Educated and experienced consultants

Our resources can be divided into two halves. Highly educated and experienced consultants comprises one half; the other half is made up of our large selection of tools and instruments. We also have technicians responsible for developing, calibrating and maintaining measurement equipment.

We carry out all kinds of projects from minor jobs for water supply companies to major marine feasibility studies for natural gas pipelines and windmill parks. We also apply our broad knowledge of geophysical methods to a wide range of highly specialised jobs.

We often work closely with our customers, and draw on the expertise of our colleagues from other areas of Ramboll. This inspires us and enables us to further develop our geophysical skills set.
