Other renewables

Geothermal energy and solar thermal energy are significantly more cost-effective when produced on a large scale.

These technologies require favourable conditions for interconnecting heat consumers, coordinated with the implementation of the production plants if they are to be profitable. Ramboll is active in the development of alternative small and large-scale renewable energy sources such as geothermal energy, solar water heating and solar photovoltaic.

Geothermal energy

Ramboll is currently involved in the ongoing exploration of geothermal energy in Denmark. Our geothermal expertise reduces our customers’ risk of drilling dry holes.

We know how to make even low-temperature geothermal heat 100 percent carbon neutral – for example using waste-to-energy in heat pumps to boost the temperature of the geothermal water.

Solar water heating

Solar water heating panels can be used on small scales for single-family houses and on large scales for block and district heating.

At Ramboll, we have been involved in the research and development of the newest technologies, including underground seasonal storage as well as the planning and design of all the largest plants in Denmark and Sweden. Since the cost of solar water heating from large plants is four to six times lower than that of heat from small plants, these large plants are now competitive with natural gas boilers in Denmark.

We expect the demand for large-scale solar heating plants to grow in countries with warm climates, centralised heat supply and a progressive climate change policy.

Solar energy (photovoltaic)

Although solar energy it is too expensive for commercial use, we consider it to be one of the options in low-energy houses of the future. For buildings in remote districts and for special appliances that are not connected to power grids, we consider solar cells in combination with 12-volt distribution to be an optimal solution.
