Energy transmission

The need to reduce carbon emissions has developed alongside the liberalisation of the electricity and gas markets. As a result, there has been a call to integrate these energy markets.
Ramboll assists others in improving the way energy is transmitted from carbon neutral energy sources to the local networks

One solution is to improve the way energy is transmitted from carbon neutral energy sources to the local networks. This means laying international power transmission lines to integrate new offshore wind farms into the electricity grid. It means laying new transmission lines for new natural gas resources. And it means expanding the district heating markets to absorb all the available carbon-free heat, for example from large waste-to-energy plants. As a multidisciplinary consultant, Ramboll offers customers solutions that take each of these options into account.

District heating transmission

In combination with thermal storage, long-distance and high-pressure transmission systems provide an effective solution for using the heat from large-scale CHP plants and waste-to-energy plants efficiently. Such systems interconnect several local distribution systems in order to provide the most efficient heat sources.

We have valuable experience working on the heat transmission system in the Copenhagen region of Denmark. This provides heat to more than 50 million square metres of heated floor area, utilizing energy from three waste-to-energy plants and four CHP plants. We have transferred our experience to more than 20 countries. Our services include all aspects of the planning, design and operation of the systems, including hydraulic optimisation and water hammering analysis.

Power transmission

We have undertaken special assignments related to environmental assessment, design, operation and construction of power transmission lines. Our latest challenge has been to establish power transmission lines interconnecting offshore wind farms.

Gas transmission

We have been involved in the planning and design of the Danish natural gas infrastructure. This includes:

  • Offshore oil and gas platforms
  • Gas transmission lines
  • Gas treatment plants
  • Gas storages
  • Compressor stations
  • Pressure reduction stations and distribution systems

Heat transmission

Our experts in district heating transmission systems work closely together with our energy planners and our consultants in energy efficient heat production. Through this collaboration, we provide our customers with solid recommendations on how to optimize the heat production in complex energy systems and how to utilise the most efficient heat sources for a larger heat market.
