Biofuel is solid, liquid, or gas fuel made from biological material, most commonly plants. A renewable energy source, biofuels are made from farming and forest industry waste products like straw, saw dust and wood chips.

We have built several environmentally friendly biofuel plants that provide efficient, carbon neutral heat to city district heating systems and electricity to power grids. This interdisciplinary work often involves Ramboll’s departments for energy production, district heating and environmental work.

Biofuels

Our team of energy and environmental specialists ensure that biofuels are produced in a sustainable way and are used in correctly designed combustion plants. With our expertise, biofuels can be used efficiently – with almost no pollution – even in very large plants.

Ramboll has undertaken a number of efficient biofuel projects, such as a 10MW wood chip boiler plant operating with flue gas condensation at a total efficiency of more than 100 percent. Currently we are involved with a power only biomass plant in Lombardy, and a heat only plant in Norway. We benefit from our experience with waste-to-energy facilities, which treat the most difficult biofuel of all – waste – in an environmentally acceptable way.

Biogas

Biogas, often produced from manure and organic waste products from the farming industry, is especially beneficial to the environment. Treating manure in a biogas plant solves several of the industrialized farming industry’s environmental problems, and the biogas can then be used directly by small-scale Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants.

Ramboll plans and designs biogas plants that meet the needs of both the farming industry and the energy company. Our projects include the world’s largest biogas plant in Holstebro, Denmark, a new innovative plant for the farming industry in Nakskov, Denmark, and biogas plants for waste water treatment facilities.
