Biomass can be used for the production of carbon neutral bioenergy in the form of biogas, heat, electricity or combined heat and power. A large variety of biomass may be used including liquid and solid agricultural biomass, wood chips, wastewater treatment residues, energy crops, industrial biomass and even algae. The type of fuel (biomass) depends on available supplies, price and the size of the bioenergy plant.
There are a number of technological options available to make use of biomass as a renewable energy source. The option most frequently used is thermal conversion where the bioenergy is produced in an environmentally sustainable way in correctly designed combustion plants. Biomass can also be converted to energy using biochemical conversion, see Biogas.
