Aviation

Ramboll has extensive experience in the delivery of airport infrastructure encompassing more than 200 completed projects in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India and Australasia. Our aviation strategists have advised government bodies and regulators around the world on safety, air traffic management and optimisation of air space design.

Ramboll offers multidisciplinary aviation and airport expertise

Ramboll is experienced in delivering complete solutions for airport projects, often in the role of lead consultant. We have designed roughly 60 million m2 of airside and landside development. From Hyderabad to Moscow, London Heathrow to Copenhagen — we have delivered multidisciplinary engineering services to major airport operators around the world.

We are known for producing innovative airfield designs that deliver long term performance and safety at a competitive cost. Our solutions often combine a minimised and highly targeted airside engineering programme with a rigorous monitoring system to ensure consistent performance over time. This approach ensures solutions are never over-engineered, keeping materials use and capital cost (CAPEX) to a minimum.

We have created our own airfield pavement management system, Airpave. Web based and user friendly, Airpave embraces pavement monitoring, prediction of likely maintenance needs and long term financial planning. The newest version of the programme, Airpave 5.0, was launched in March 2011 with an improved UX design, making it even easier to use.

Our expertise includes:

airport engineering
  • Market evaluation and forecasting
  • Feasibility studies
  • Site selection
  • Operational requirements and conditions
  • Master planning, strategic planning, business planning and feasibility studies.
  • Planning, design and supervision of construction work related to runways, taxiways and aprons
  • Maintenance management of airside and runway systems
  • Flight navigation aids and ground aids
  • Planning and design of passenger and cargo terminals
  • Planning of landside and access facilities
  • Planning design and supervision of aircraft maintenance facilities
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Risk analysis and flight safety management
When air traffi“c at Sandefjord airport rose sharply in 2004 due to the opening of low cost routes, in particular by Ryanair, the airport operator commissioned Ramboll to masterplan a phased expansion to meet increased passenger demand

Airline Master Planning

Ramboll has carried out numerous master plans for airports around the world, including projects in Africa, Asia, Russia, Europe and South America.

A professional master plan includes in general:

• Initial market assessment and forecast
• Study and condition assessment of the present inventory and facilities
• Gap analysis
• Development plan with alternative scenarios
• Investment analysis (CAPEX)
• Financial analysis
• Environmental and social analysis

The development of a professional master plan requires a multidisciplinary team of airport planners, designers, architects, engineers, environmental scientists and economists – all with in-depth knowledge of the airport and aviation sector.

Furthermore it is important that the Master Plan is fully integrated with the strategic plan and the business plan for the airport in question.

Finally it is essential that the master plan is developed in full compliance with international ICAO (International Civil Aviation organisation) standards, as well as in accordance with national standards and practices.

Copenhagen International Airport - long term collaboration. Since 1992, Ramboll has served as in-house consultant for all the airport’s maintenance, refurbishment and expansion needs.

Helicopter landing pads

Over the years Ramboll has carried out work on design and operational guidelines for a range of helicopter landing pads in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

We have a special insight into the international and Danish regulations governing the establishment of such landing pads, as well as the operational benefits and constraints of heliports or helistops.

Large hospitals are currently converting their emergency transport facilities to reflect the increased use of ambulance-helicopters. Ramboll's extensive knowledge of emergency readiness combined with our expertise in aviation operations puts us in a unique position to design helicopter landing pads for the specific purposes of the health sector.

Reducing climate impacts and improving efficiency

In the aviation industry real advances in sustainability must be made at both the micro- and macro- level. Lean engineering of aviation infrastructure is essential. Supporting coordinated industry-wide action to reduce climate impacts is equally important. Ramboll's aviation team is experienced at advising private developers, operators, government bodies and regulators on strategic approaches to aviation development that foreground both efficiency and sustainability. We recently provided feasibility analysis and socio-economic studies for the Nordic Air Navigation Service providers on aspects of the proposed Single European Sky scheme. The purpose of the EU initiative is to rationalise flight patterns across Europe to improve flight efficiency and reduce C02 emissions.
