The Gassco Emden Project - Extensive revamp of vital onshore gas receiving terminal

After more than 30 years of operation, the Norsea Gas Terminal in Emden, Germany, needed to be refurbished to maintain safe and reliable gas transportation. The major scope of work included new receiving-, gas heating-, utilities- and process facilities. Ramboll carried out the FEED study proposing the technical solution.

LNG import and regasification facility in Finland

Ramboll Oil & Gas has performed a feasibility study investigating the possibilities to construct an LNG import and regasification plant in Finland. The study involves investigation into novel onshore and offshore techniques for offloading and regasification of LNG with special consideration to navigating in the narrow Finnish archipelago and to the often cold climate.  

Underground gas storage at Ninotsminda gas capped oil field

Georgia has experienced a pressing desire to build an Underground Gas Storage (UGS) for the sake of security of natural gas supply within the country of Georgia. An underground gas storage offers the ability to accommodate seasonal and short-term fluctuations in the demand for natural gas.

Extension of underground gas storage facility, EIA, at Lille Torup

Energinet.dk planned an extension of their gas storage facility in Lille Torup. The facility comprises an underground gas storage in a salt cavern an a processing plant. Ramboll provided a number of environmental assessment services for the project.

Economic study of commercial gas storage in Lille Torup, Denmark

Since the Danish gas market was fully liberalised in 2004, Danish consumers have been free to choose between suppliers. One of the companies that has stepped up to ensure a fair and flexible market is Energinet.dk, which, among other activities, oversees the volume balance in Danish gas storages.

Natural gas storage in the EU

Ramboll Oil & Gas' Studies & Planning department was selected by the European Commission to review the European gas storage market and provide guidance in the input for the Second Strategic Energy Review and the work of the Gas Coordination Group.

Risk analysis at Nybro gas treatment plant

Ramboll Oil & Gas has provided a number of services for the Nybro gas treatment plant in Denmark, where natural gas from the South Arne and Tyra fields is purified and dried, and sulphur is removed, when necessary. In 2005 Ramboll conducted a major risk analysis assessment for the Nybro gas treatment plant.

Balticconnector pipeline project - technical project management consultancy

The natural gas pipeline project in the Baltic Sea - the so-called Balticconnector - is now being realised. Ramboll carried out feasibility studies for this large-scale EU funded project and has been appointed technical project management consultant and engineering consultant for the project. The Balticconnector is a 100-150km offshore pipeline linking the gas networks of Finland and Estonia.

Cutting carbon footprints - flare gas recovery on South Arne

Hydrocarbon emissions from platforms and refineries are a source of atmospheric pollution, and there is a strong drive in the industry to find environment-friendly solutions. Ramboll Oil & Gas has considerable experience in this field, and recently we completed the design of a flare gas recovery system for the North Sea platform, South Arne operated by Hess Denmark.

The Tyrihans oil and gas field, Norway

Statoil will soon be supplying their customers with oil and gas from the Tyrihans field on the Norwegian continental shelf. In 2006 Ramboll Oil & Gas commenced a detailed design project for the new pipelines and subsea structures on Tyrihans.

Natural gas storage in the EU - projects for the European Commission

Securing natural gas supply to EU member states is a matter of significant importance for the EU. The increasing import dependency of natural gas in the EU coupled with increased demand for flexibility in gas markets has made natural gas storage a central issue in the EU’s energy debate regarding market development and security of supply.

Gas utilisation study, Yemen

Ramboll Oil & Gas became part of a comprehensive international project to replace oil, the main source of energy in Yemen, with natural gas.

Natural gas storage facility in Etzel, Northern Germany

The national gas markets in Europe are changing rapidly. Continuous liberalisation, dependency on gas imports from outside the EU, and increasing consumer demand have stepped up the need for strategic as well as commercial storage facilities. Ramboll has been deeply involved in these developments since the 1990s and in 2008 we assisted Etzel-Kavernenbetriebsgesellschaft mbH & CO. KG with the development of the Etzel salt cavern storage facility near Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

Finngulf LNG terminal – Technical feasibility

For several years, Ramboll had assisted Gasum Oy with their plan of constructing a terminal for LNG import to the South coast of Finland. Following the feasibility study Ramboll was awarded a contract for project management services that focused on the critical tasks of the project.

Engineering for onshore oil and gas facility at Quiriquire

The Quiriquire field, located in Monagas State, Venezuela, is the largest oil field in eastern Venezuela and also by worldwide standards it is a giant field. Maxus/YPF awarded Ramboll the detailed engineering for an onshore oil and gas production facility at Quiriquire.

Plant-wide De-oiling of Produced Water using Advanced Control; Supporting research

In 2012 the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation announced its financial contribution to a research project conducted by Aalborg University and endorsed by Maersk Oil and Ramboll Oil & Gas. The project tackles the problem of oil recovery by looking into ways of ensuring a higher productivity and less oil in the produced water.

Upgrade of LNG berth at Ras Laffan in Qatar

Ras Laffan is the centre of LNG and GTL activities in Qatar and the port is considered one of the largest LNG export facilities in the world. Ramboll Oil & Gas undertook the detailed engineering for an upgrade of the LNG berth at Ras Laffan during 2009 and 2010.

Eliminating gas flaring on offshore platform Abkatun D

Changes in Mexican environmental regulations required the Mexican petroleum company, PEMEX, to reduce and eventually eliminate gas flaring on its offshore platforms. In order to comply with this requirement, additional compression capacity was needed on Abkatun D.

Securing supply and diversifying the energy mix in Morocco

In a joint venture with French partner Sofregaz, Ramboll will develop an integrated gas-to-power project for Morocco’s state power and water utility ONEE.

Hejre development project

The Hejre field development project in the north-western part of the Danish sector of the North Sea will be one of the largest Danish investments in offshore oil and gas production for many years to come. Ramboll has been involved in the project for a number of years.

Gryphon FPSO - air compression upgrade project on an EPCM contract

The Maersk owned Gryphon Alpha FPSO processes oil and gas for the Gryphon, South Gryphon, Tullich and Maclure fields in the British North Sea. The oil is exported by tanker. Gas is exported via a pipeline to Beryl Alpha, where it is transported to shore via the SAGE system. For this project Ramboll performed detailed design including procurement and fabrication of 3 new air compressor skids.

GOLIAT - integrated pipeline analysis program

Some of the many challenges facing the offshore oil and gas industry are thermal buckling of pipelines and large amounts of free spans caused by a highly undulated seabed. To counter these problems, Ramboll has developed a comprehensive design analysis package, GOLIAT (General Offshore Linepipe Analysis Tool) for the oil and gas industry. The end result for the customer is a cost optimised design with a documented safety level.

Khor Mor LPG Recovery Plant - Kurdistan’s first power plant

Dana Gas - a private sector, natural gas company - was appointed to develop, process and transport natural gas from the Khor Mor Gas Field in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in order to provide natural gas to fuel domestic electric power generation plants near Erbil and Suleymania which provide electricity supplies to over four million Iraqis. This project has saved the Kurdistan Regional Government the need to use diesel for power generation with significant cost savings.

FEED and detailed design for Gudrun pipeline system

As part of the Sleipner SPORT development project, satellite platform Gudrun was tied-in to Sleipner, for oil and gas processing and export. Statoil awarded Ramboll the FEED and detailed engineering of the subsea pipeline system.

Increasing well capacity of jack-up drilling rig Maersk Inspirer

In 2012 Maersk FPSO awarded Ramboll Oil & Gas an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract comprising enhancements to the jack-up drilling rig, Maersk Inspirer.

Smokeless flare, Fahahil Stripping Plant

Ramboll was given the task of remodelling and enlarging an existing old flare system at the Dukhan oil field on the west coast of Qatar.  In addition, we were to find a method for reclaiming some of the gas that would otherwise be burnt in the tower. At last, we were to implement improved combustion technology to obtain what is known as a “smokeless flare”- which means a flame without smoke.

Tyra East Rationalisation Project

The Tyra Field is the largest gas field in the Danish North Sea sector – it is operated by Maersk Oil, and has been producing since 1984. Ramboll has been part of the Tyra East Rationalisation Project; just one phase in a series of Optimisation Projects in the field.

Tyra South East A - Design of unmanned wellhead platform for gas condensate field

As part of the Tyra field development in the Danish North Sea, operator, Maersk Oil, contracted Ramboll to assist with a number of engineering services for the design of the Tyra South East A platform. Tyra South East A came on stream in 2002.

Klaipeda LNG facility. Road map

Ramboll assessed a number of formerly prepared concept alternatives of LNG import, reviewed the Klaipeda harbour location and vicinity, and derived a project proposal based on the use of floating storage and regasification of LNG.

EPCM assistance to Equatorial Guinea Development

The Alba Field is one of the largest producers in the Gulf of Guinea. As engineering consultant, Ramboll paid a significant contribution to the development of the oil and gas field from 1997-2003.

Environmental challenges associated with decommissioning

Study for Danish competence and innovation center reveals that it is hard to generalise about environmental concerns in relation to the decommissioning of offshore oil- and gas structures.

Cathodic protection of more than 600 wells

In 2010 Qatar Petroleum initiated a major life time extension programme in the Dukhan field 95 km west of the capital Doha in Qatar. Ramboll was awarded the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) study for the cathodic protection and off plot power supply for more than 600 oil, gas, and water wells.

Smooth and cost-effective EPC set-up in the North Sea

In the summer of 2014 a joint venture between Ramboll Oil & Gas and Semco Maritime were rewarded an EPC contract for the provision of onshore and offshore services to Hess Denmark’s platforms in the Danish North Sea.

Pre-engineering and detailed design on Nexus FPSO topsides

In 2006 Ramboll Oil & Gas commenced our biggest project to date when we initiated the pre-engineering work on the Nexus project for APL NEXUS and Samsung. Nexus is a generic FPSO with a free and fully weather-vaning turret mooring that can accommodate up to 6 risers.

Cross-border tie-in from subsea station, Trym, to Harald platform

Maersk Oil is the main operator of the Danish North Sea oil fields. In 2011 Maersk Oil entered its first cross-border tie-in, which enables gas and condensate from Norwegian waters to be taken to Maersk Oil’s Harald platform for processing before exporting onwards.

Connecting energy flows: LNG projects in the Baltic region

Ramboll is engaged in several liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. For instance, we investigate the possibilities of setting up LNG import facilities in Estonia, Finland and Sweden.

Amazing Al Shaheen

Al Shaheen is a production oil and gas field off the North East coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. The oil field lies over the North Gas Field; the largest gas field in the world. Al Shaheen has been developed by Maersk Oil in what constitutes one of the largest and most complex offshore oil and gas projects undertaken in the world today.

Assessments for the Solsort field development

In 2010 DONG Energy made an interesting oil find in the Danish North Sea, in the Solsort Prospect. An extensive data collection programme was carried out, and subsequently Ramboll assisted on a number of studies to assess the feasibility in developing the asset.

Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan

The East Baltic States of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are, apart from Cyprus and Malta, the only four EU member states which remain isolated from the present integrated EU gas market and transmission system.

Society consultant on energy trade in the Arab region

CESI and Ramboll teamed up to determine the best options for electrical and gas interconnections in connection with the creation of a single energy market for 20 Arab countries by 2030.

Kirinskoye, Sakhalin – Installation engineering in the Arctic region

Kirinskoye is the first offshore field in Russia to utilise a subsea system for natural gas production. The field holds over 100 billion cubic metres of gas and 11.4 million tonnes of gas condensate.   The Kirinskoye gas and condensate field is part of the 'Kirinsky block' in the Sea of Okhotsk and is one of the main development priorities for Gazprom, the world's largest gas producer.The field is part of a Russian Federation strategy for development of an integrated gas production, transportation and supply system to the regions of Eastern Siberia and the Far East.

Flowlines and transmission pipelines on Gjøa, Norway

As a net importer of natural gas, the UK is heavily dependent on reliable gas supplies from gas exporting countries such as Norway. Ramboll Oil & Gas is in charge of the detailed design of the pipeline systems for the Gjøa field, which will be connected to the UK gas transmission system.

The Baltic Pipe Project – Feasibility study

Ramboll was awarded a feasibility study in joint venture with Gazoprojekt, and Ernst & Young as sub-consultants, to provide socioeconomic, financial and technical foundation for the prospective Baltic Pipe implementation.

Balticconnector pipeline FEED study

Ramboll was awarded a FEED study for Balticconnector - an offshore 20” gas transportation pipeline of approximately 81 km (50 miles) in the Gulf of Finland aiming at interconnecting the Finnish and Estonian natural gas distribution networks.

LNG terminal in Estonia

Port of Tallinn Ltd (AS Tallinna Sadam), the port authority in Estonia, is considering the possibility of placing a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) receiving terminal at a location in either Muuga Harbour or Paldiski South Harbour. The purpose of the LNG terminal is to receive liquefied natural gas from ships, store the liquid in storage tanks, vaporise the LNG, and then deliver the natural gas into a high pressure distribution pipeline or to a local major gas consumer.

The Nord Stream pipeline project

European gas consumption is increasing, and in order to meet these demands and ensure a long-term reliable supply line of energy, it was decided to establish a 1,224 kilometre dual pipeline system running from Vyborg, Russia to Lubmin near Greifswald, Germany. The project is called the Nord Stream Pipeline.

Polarled: Record-breaking subsea pipeline crosses the Arctic Circle

The Polarled pipeline project is part of the plans for developing fields further north in the Norwegian Sea.  

Environmental Impact Assessment of Ellund/Egtved pipeline

Ramboll assisted Energinet.dk in carrying out environmental investigations and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) in relation to the expansion of the capacity of the gas transmission system between Ellund and Egtved in the southern part of Jutland, Denmark.

Hoima - Kampala Refined Petroleum Pipeline

Ramboll was assigned an early phase study for the “Hoima-Kampala Refined Petroleum Products Pipeline” project in Uganda, East Africa comprising a 210 km (130 miles) pipeline for transport of refined oil products between Hoima refinery / terminal and Kampala distribution terminal.

Detailed design of crude oil import and export facilities at Halul Island

80 kilometres off the coast of Qatar, Halul Island is the base for 11 large crude oil storage tanks and pumping facilities, as well as power generation and water desalination plants. Ramboll was chosen to be part of plans to expand this complex, by carrying out a detailed design of the crude oil import and export terminal.

Offshore field development and modifications for Halfdan since 1999

Ramboll has acted as steady engineering consultant to Maersk Oil on their Danish offshore oil field, Halfdan, since 1999. Ramboll’s involvement started with early field development work and has continued through the years with ongoing brownfield work.

Unprecedented substation design for Hornsea One offshore wind farm

DONG Energy Wind Power is developing the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm in the UK. Ramboll carried out the design of a reactive compensation substation for the wind farm, as well as technical assistance during tendering, fabrication and installation.

Gulfhavn Oil Terminal LNG – Technical feasibility study

Ramboll performed a study to evaluate the technical pre-feasibility of an LNG plant at Stigsnæs Gulfhavn Oil Terminal. The study comprised a feasibility evaluation of the terminal together with cost estimation, and a 3D visualisation of the terminal layouts.

Conceptual study for wellhead platform in the Snorre field

The Snorre field in the Norwegian North Sea is to be developed further through the addition of a wellhead platform, and Ramboll was appointed to provide conceptual recommendations for the facility.

The Piranema FPSO - designing for a confined space

The FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) Piranema is the world's first cylinder shaped FPSO in production. It was constructed by Sevan Marine with Kanfa and Ramboll as engineering partners.

South Timbalier Field - Two Platforms for B Complex

Ramboll provided engineering services for a fast track offshore project in the Gulf of Mexico.

Drilling and production platform for the Gulf of Mexico

Ramboll provided complete engineering services for topside and pipeline structures in the Gulf of Mexico.

The development of the Kuvykin field

Ramboll will contribute to the development of the Kuvykin field in the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea with pre-FEED studies for a drilling complex and topside living quarters designed for operation in arctic conditions.

FPSO risk and safety studies

Safety of personnel and protection of costly assets are of overriding concern on all processing plants whether they be FPSOs or traditional platform structures.

Offshore substation for Belgian wind farms. Detailed design.

Ramboll assisted Belgium’s transmission system operator, Elia, with the detailed design of an Offshore Switch Yard platform (OSY). The work was part of a large project that plans to improve wind energy transmission.

Offshore field development and modifications for Dan F since 1991

As consultant to operator Maersk Oil, Ramboll has worked on a number of projects at the North Sea oil field, Dan F.

The Morvin field development project

The Morvin field is located 20 kilometres west of the Åsgard B platform at Haltenbanken in the Norwegian Sea.

Safety documentation for Maersk ultra deepwater drillship

Ramboll assisted Maersk Drilling with supervision and facilitating the development of safety documentation for a newly built deepwater drillship. It is Maersk Drilling's first drillship in a future ultra deepwater fleet, which will operate at extreme depths and offer outstanding solutions both regarding safety and efficiency.

Mustang - Unmanned wellhead platform for the Gulf of Mexico

BHP Billiton were extending their activities in the Gulf of Mexico, West Cameron area, a with an unmanned wellhead platform. Ramboll was awarded the design of this minimum-facility platform.

Rectification of GRE piping systems at Al Shaheen

Maersk Oil Qatar operates the Al Shaheen field located 180 kilometres off the North East coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. First oil was produced in 1994, and since then the field has undergone tremendous development with modification works and new designs still taking place on a continuous basis.

Detailed design of early, onshore production facility at Banyu Urip

The Banyu Urip project involves the development of the major, Indonesian onshore oil field, Banyu Urip, operated by ExxonMobil's Mobil Cepu Ltd. The field is estimated to contain approximately 450 million barrels of oil.

Concept study for new flare project at Statoil Refinery Kalundborg

The StatoilHydro Refinery in Kalundborg is flaring directly to the atmosphere from a certain amount of PSV’s. The purpose with the project is to collect all discharge facilities to a new common flare system, Flare-3.

South Arne Phase III - Tie-in of two additional wellhead platforms

In 2010, Hess decided to expand their activities on the South Arne field with two additional wellhead platforms as part of the Phase III Development. Hess, Semco Maritime and Ramboll formed an EPC alliance to carry out brownfield work related to the project.

FEED and detailed design for Gina Krog subsea pipelines

As part of the development of the Sleipner area, Statoil planned to utilise existing process and export facilities for production from satellite platforms. Statoil selected Ramboll to perform  FEED and detailed engineering of subsea pipelines to the satellite field, Gina Krog.

Nini and Cecilie - Minimum-facility platforms for a marginal field

Ramboll has assisted DONG Energy with a development project for modification of the Siri field in the North Sea, where we designed two lightweight and robust minimum-facility platforms, Nini and Cecilie.The two unmanned wellhead platforms operate as satellites tied back to the mother platform, Siri, via three inter-field pipelines. The water depth is approximately 60 metres.

Environmental Impact Assessment of near-shore wind farms

Ramboll prepares Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) of three near-shore wind farms in Danish waters for the Danish energy grid owner, Energinet.dk. The project involves preparing Environmental Impact Assessments for both the offshore wind farms as well as the onshore connection to the national grid.
