This project addresses odour problems adjacent to the tidal inlet at Carina Bay Reserve, Sydney. The site has a complex history, mangroves were infilled and various dredging works were undertaken in the 1970’s. There is no record of these works and the fill was likely to have been contaminated with acid sulfate soils.

The channel created in the 1970’s has changed since construction, in particular a sediment plug has developed which has caused areas of stagnant water. This water has also been contaminated with vegetation matter and the combination of the acid sulfate soils, the stagnant water and the vegetation has caused the odour issue.

Conceptual and detailed designs were undertaken to improve water flow, protect vegetation and allow future management of the sediment problem at the site.
