The Piranema FPSO - designing for a confined space

The Piranema FPSO

The Piranema FPSO

The FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) Piranema is the world's first cylinder shaped FPSO in production. It was constructed by Sevan Marine with Kanfa and Ramboll as engineering partners.

Going deeper underground

The cylindrical FPSO is designed to provide improved motions, higher stability reserves and higher deck load capacity than conventional units. The Piranema is working under a contract with Petrobras on the Piranema field, Brazil. It was designed for operations in ultra deep water, ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 metres.

30,000 barrels per day

The FPSO has an oil storage capacity of 300,000 barrels and is equipped with an oil process capacity of 30,000 barrels per day and a gas compression capacity of 3.6 billion m3 per day. The Piranema hull was constructed at the Yantai Raffles Shipyard in China. The unit was then moved to Keppel Verolme Shipyard in Rotterdam, Holland where the outfitting and assembly of the process plant took place.

Ramboll's scope of work included engineering and design of piping and steel/structure of the 2,500 tonnes process topside, which consists of:

  • Separation module
  • Scrubber module
  • Manifold area
  • Compressor interface/WHRU structure
  • Interface piping
  • Etc.

Ramboll was also responsible for HSE, document control,  and planning for the entire topside. At project peak, 52 Ramboll engineers were involved in the project.
