In 2006 Ramboll Oil & Gas commenced our biggest project to date when we initiated the pre-engineering work on the Nexus project for APL NEXUS and Samsung. Nexus is a generic FPSO with a free and fully weather-vaning turret mooring that can accommodate up to 6 risers.
Mobilisation of a large project team
Undertaking a project of such magnitude required a project team of 200 engineers at peek and on a regular basis 135 engineers were assigned to the Nexus. Ramboll carried out mechanical, electrical and intrumentation engineering support and conducted a number of key environmental and safety studies. The project was headed by Ramboll's Norwegian oil and gas experts but carried out in collaboration with our Danish office, which handled all structural design.
Optimising design and improving safety
The knowledge and experience we gained working on the pre-engineering design was valuable for the subsequent detailed design of all topsides structures and facilities on the FPSO, which included layout and assessment of process facilities on deck. Ramboll also identified and evaluated potential risks and hazards using among other methods CFD-based modelling (Computational Fluid Dynamics). With the resulting reliablity estimations of the facilities, we were able to optimise the design and improve safety considerably.
This fast track project was completed in March 2008.
