Changes in Mexican environmental regulations required the Mexican petroleum company, PEMEX, to reduce and eventually eliminate gas flaring on its offshore platforms. In order to comply with this requirement, additional compression capacity was needed on Abkatun D.

Adding additional compression capacity

The additional compression capacity was needed to move the gas to a downstream collection point. A project was initiated to add two single-lift compression trains to accommodate this need.

Kiewit, a major provider of construction services for the major sectors throughout North America, headed the project. Kiewit awarded Ramboll (then Excel Engineering) the engineering and drafting for the two new single lift compression modules.

Two new multi-deck compression modules

The multi-deck modules each weigh on the order of 1,160 metric tons. The heart of each of the modules is a GE LM2500+ gas turbine driving two Dresser-Rand centrifugal compressor sections. Each module is capable of compressing up to 144 MMscfd of sour gas (lethal H2S and CO2).

Design including balance of plant equipment

Ramboll’s work included the structural, piping, instrumentation and electrical design of the modules and incorporation of the balance of plant facilities into the modules.

Balance of plant equipment included scrubbers, air coolers, firewater piping, seal gas and fuel gas conditioning, relief systems, and interconnecting electrical and instrumentation necessary for the proper operation of the compression modules.
