With 12,000 expected passengers per day, the future Carlsberg Station will become the gateway to the new urban area called ”Carlsberg Byen”. Ramboll is in charge of the assessment of the rail safety of this busy station.

Carlsberg Byen is an urban development area in Copenhagen, where around 3000 dwellings, offices, shops, venues for cultural events and a variety of study environments will be built within the coming years. The new Carlsberg station will be the gateway to Carlsberg Byen and will ensure attractive public transport for the many new students. The station will replace the existing Enghave Station nearby.

Reconstruction requires new approvals

The new S-train station is expected to have around 12,000 passengers per day travelling from/to the station and a new traffic terminal for S-trains and busses with possibility of transfer between S-trains and busses will be established. Ramboll is conducting an independent assessment of the rail safety at the new Carlsberg Station, prior to the opening of the station for passengers.

In connection with the establishment of the new Carlsberg Station the existing tracks and overhead catenary system are moved laterally to make room for a new platform. A new platform is built with cantilever bridge deck and with access roads to the platform. The stoppage including interlocking installations is moved from Enghave Station in 2016 and subsequently the existing station is closed and removed.

The project is carried out in four phases, thus requiring four approvals (for commissioning) from the authorities. Since the work potentially may influence the rail safety, the project includes risk assessment and documentation that a risk assessment process based on the EU-requirements in CSM-RA (Common Safety Method – Risk Assessment) has been carried out. The documentation is approved by an independent assessor.

Ramboll conducts independent assessment

Ramboll conducts independent assessment of the new Carlsberg Station. The purpose of the assessor’s work is to evaluate whether the risk assessment process is undertaken in accordance with CSM-RA and whether the result of the process is correct. In conclusion Ramboll delivers a safety assessment report, which may form basis for the project application for commissioning.

The essential basis for the assessor’s assessment of the safety documents:

  • System definition
  • Safety plan
  • Hazard log
  • Safety documentation
An assessment includes the technical disciplines relevant to the project. Ramboll’s assessment team thus
comprises competences within risk assessment, tracks, platforms, drainage, bridge structures, geotechnics, operation and traffic management, interlocking systems and remote control.
