Groundwater mapping - protecting our most valuable resource

As a leading consultant in water and environment Ramboll has carried out a large portion of the Danish National Groundwater Mapping Programme which comprises multidisciplinary hydrogeological projects.

The Danish national groundwater mapping program is essential in securing clean, safe and fresh water. In Denmark the supply of drinking water is based entirely on groundwater. Hence the availability and accessibility to groundwater resources is of crucial importance.

Safe water for future generations

During the course of the 20th century Denmark experienced an increase in groundwater pollution. The Danish Government's official position is that drinking water should be based on pure groundwater which only needs simple treatment with aeration, pH adjustment and filtration before it is distributed to the consumers.

In the light of this development both public and political attention was drawn to Denmark's water dilemma, eventually resulting in the Danish National Groundwater Mapping Program being initiated in 1999.

The groundwater mapping program is administrated by the Danish Ministry of the Environment and calls for detailed groundwater mapping of Particularly Valuable Groundwater Abstraction Areas, comprising 40% of Denmark's land mass.

The local municipalities are responsible for resource protection and planning and they apply the findings of the comprehensive hydrogeological mapping projects in this work.

Among other things, Ramboll's work helps identify pollution and vulnerability problems, improve geological and hydrological information of survey areas and suggest protection measures.

Ramboll's world-class team of experts

Denmark is leading in the field of groundwater mapping as it has been a top political priority for many years, and Ramboll enjoys an outstanding reputation in the business due to our unique team of excellent geologists, geophysicists, hydrologists and civil engineers who have contributed to the groundwater mapping process for more than a decade now.

Ramboll’s services include performance of field surveys, data processing and interpretation, geological and groundwater 3D modeling and conclusive general recommendations regarding water supply strategies for specific abstraction areas.

Water consumers finance the mapping program by paying 0.04 Euro per consumed m3 water. The program is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
