Ramboll wins shared 1. prize in International idea competition

With its unique positioning and an area covering the size of 625 football fields, Nordhavnen in Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s largest and most ambitious city development project these years. Together with COBE architects and SLETH, Ramboll has been elected as winners of an idea competition with the proposal “Nordholmene, urban delta”.

From a 50 year perspective, Nordhavnen is to be extended to encompass 40,000 inhabitants and 40,000 workplaces. In total, 180 proposals from around the world were submitted. Nordholmene is one out of three winning proposals in the international idea competition. In 2009, the team to prepare the final detailed master plan will be elected.

“Nordhavnen opens the opportunity for 40,000 people in Copenhagen to get nature as its nearest neighbour – in the middle of the city – and for creating a neighbourhood which drastically rethinks how ways of living can be combined with energy, environment, traffic and cityscape. We look forward to further qualifying our proposal and come up with the optimal solution for Copenhagen,” says Filip Zibrandtsen from Ramboll, who has teamed up with Dan Stubbergaard from COBE and Søren Leth from SLETH in drawing up the winning proposal for Nordholmene.

Nordhavn as international role model for sustainable development

A neighbourhood which does not emit CO2 and places public transport and cycling on the world map. The vision is that Nordhavnen is to set new standards for sustainable development to mark Copenhagen at next years’ United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009 (COP15). In addition, the neighbourhood would be an obvious site in case of Copenhagen being chosen to host EXPO 2020.

11 distinct islets

The main grip consists of eleven individual islets encircled by canals and water. The islets are planned as manageable units, small neighbourhoods with each its special identity, utilising the characteristics of the location and its historical position as a harbour. At Nordhavnen it has to be easier to walk, cycle and take the Metro than using your car.

Commuters back to the city

Transportation to and from work accounts for an increasing share of society’s expenditure, whether measured in time, money or pollution. In this way 160,000 people commute daily from their residence in the surrounding area to their place of work in Copenhagen. The new neighbourhood makes it possible to live in the city close to work, culture and service functions – in close contact with nature, light, air and water.

Dry weather on the bicycle tracks

In the proposal, an efficient public transport system with bicycle and walking connections to tie the neighbourhood together with the rest of the city are prioritised. According to the idea proposal, the area will be serviced by an elevated Metro track and a bicycle network which together will create a green artery. The elevated track loops as a linear park area and at the same time functions as a cover for a bicycle motorway, so that you are able to cycle in dry weather all year round at Nordhavnen.
