A Method for Assessing Greener Alternatives between Chemical Products Following the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, co-written by Ramboll Environ’s Ashley Kreuder, Tamara House-Knight, Angela Harris and Lisa Grice, was published in the March 2017 edition of ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

Based on work completed for a chemical industry client (Millipore Sigma, a Merck KGaA subsidiary), the paper describes an approach for establishing green chemistry metrics (GCM) to evaluate chemicals and chemical processes against the American Chemistry Council (ACS)’s 12 Principles of Green Chemistry guidance using readily available data, such as that gathered in compliance with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The GCM approach is based on generally accepted industry practices, encompasses a diverse product portfolio, remains inexpensive to implement with on-hand data and fosters meaningful communications about chemical sustainability options.
