Pre-Incident Planning PhaseWe draw from extensive practical experience in oil spill contingency planning when developing spill response actions in order to control, contain and recover the oil from the environment and manage and limit liability.
Response PhaseRamboll’s oil spill emergency response services is comprehensive, responsive and practical. It includes assisting with strategic decision making, coordination, the provision of field services and remediation management.
Ramboll has conducted environmental assessments for more than 100 hazardous releases. Our staff experience includes work on the Exxon Valdez up through the Deepwater Horizon Incident in the Gulf of Mexico.
Our mine closure team has been involved with many significant closure projects locally and globally. Our capabilities include progressive closure planning, mine closure liability and cost estimation, approvals and licensing and compliance monitoring, audit and site inspections.
Net Ecosystem Benefit Analysis (NEBA)
NEBA is an analytical framework by which the effects of alternative actions on the environment can be quantified and compared. A world leader in the development and application of NEBA, we use this framework as a strategic decision-making tool, incorporating our ecosystem services, oil and gas, risk assessment, health and safety, resource economics and remediation expertise. In Australia we have used NEBA to help clients reduce and manage environmental liabilities and associated costs and have pioneered its use for offshore decommissioning and remediation projects for oil and gas clients.
Process Safety Risk Management
We deliver our PSRM services in all facets of the oil and gas, minerals, chemicals, metals processing and other industries, drawing on the local and global experience of our staff. Our PSRM expertise is supported by other specialist services (such as quantitative risk assessment, consequence analysis, and computational fluid dynamics), and we can provide both baseline PSRM reviews and advanced PSRM support. We are also able to provide independent support to business in the form of facilitation of HAZOPs, LOPA and SIL workshops.
Select project experienceOil Spill Response
Ramboll experts in Australia assisted in the response to the aftermath of a major oil spill. Services provided included fate and transport modelling, aquatic chemistry, water quality, air quality, human health, industrial hygiene, ecotoxicology, ecology, GIS mapping, risk assessment, database management, restoration engineering, and natural resource damages.
Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines
On behalf of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, we prepared a Closure Plan for the Mt Charlotte mine along the lines of the Strategic Framework for Mine Closure Planning (ANZMEC & MCA, 2000). The closure plan document presented the objectives for closure, proposed end land uses, details of stakeholder consultation, risk assessment, closure criteria, a closure action plan and environmental management of closure and rehabilitation activities. The document was made publicly available and the Closure Plan was commended by the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources as a good example of where the Strategic Framework for Mine Closure model had been applied in a practical situation.
Accidental Release Dispersion Analysis - Confidential Client
We completed an extensive dispersion analysis for accidental releases of ammonia from large anhydrous ammonia storage tanks on a processing site using complex Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, to compare with historical 2D modelling techniques.
Landmark Offshore Decommissioning Projectc - confidential Client
We are leading a landmark offshore decommissioning project for a confidential client in Western Australia. The project is the first application that incorporates comprehensive ecosystem service valuation and NEBA into environmental decision making for offshore decommissioning in the oil and gas industry.
We conducted the independent safety case validation of an FLNG (Floating LNG) facility, including review of all bow-ties developed for the Safety Case.
PSRM - Confidential Client
As the Process Safety Risk Management advisor to a major mining company, our consultants worked alongside the company’s PSM Manager in the development of the initial Occupied Buildings Risk Assessment Methodology to investigate potential effects of process incidents on neighbouring structures where individuals were required to work.
PSRM Strategic Technical Risk Reviews
Our consultants worked in or led teams of Process Safety Risk Management Specialist assisting a major mining company to develop PSM review Protocol, and review nine of its global operations facilities, including Uranium, Alumina, Aluminium Smelters, Minerals Sands, and Copper Mines & Smelters in Australia and globally.
