This time around we meet René Søgaard and Johnny Mikkelsen who have joined our legal consulting team working with contract and commercial management based in Copenhagen.

What do you work with?
René: The aim for us is to strengthen our position as a contract management service provider with a particular focus on larger CAPEX projects. Our role will be to provide consulting services to our clients but also to develop and expand the business area.
What made you guys want to join Ramboll Management Consulting?
Johnny: Ramboll is a people company and with a culture that is compelling. The prospect of starting something new from a professional point of view was a challenge that I couldn’t resist.
René: Sounds like my story. Ramboll is a well-recognised company with a strong market position, and this - combined with the ambition to further develop the area of contract management - was an intriguing opportunity matching my ambition to move into management consulting.

What is the most significant professional experience you have had so far?
Johnny: If I should take that one, I would point to my procurement and supply chain experiences where we managed to transform the procurement function to become a strategic partner to the business having a spend of more than DKK 2 billion under control.
It was pleasing to see at the end that we generated substantial savings working with the organisation and suppliers optimising on requirements, processes, and cost.
What are the most exciting development within your field of work?
Johnny: There is a clear trend in the sectors that we address to focus on procurement and supply chain functions as a value driver for optimisation of financial performance. The ability to combine commercial, technical and legal competences are a differentiator and these competences are in general difficult to get hold off.
René: Unlike other consulting disciplines, procurement is an area which has only received academic attention in the past few decades. In this, commercial contract management is a relatively new specialised discipline within procurement, so you can say that it is one of the latest developments, with focus expanding beyond the point of contract signing.
How are you planning on bringing this to our clients?
René: We already have an established CCM department offering procurement consulting services, so you could say we are now expanding our service offering.
Johnny: The consulting business are split in a management sector with very limited technical knowledge and the more traditional engineering consulting business not having a strong focus on the procurement, contractual, and commercial aspects.
So, getting people like René and myself on board, both coming from the energy industry (Oil & Gas, Wind) working with large infrastructure and energy projects fits well in the team. By this we can bring the right competences in front of our clients combining the competences and capabilities of the contract management, legal consulting, and our technical experts from e.g. Ramboll Energy.
How do you define the higher purpose of what you do?
René: This may sound fluffy, but at the end of the day we enable companies to work together across disciplines. And this can be very hard despite the good intensions.
Johnny: On a less aspiration note, we offer large projects commercial safeguarding. It may not be a higher purpose but surely one worth a lot to clients.
What (or who) is your best source of inspiration?
René: Hmm, difficult to answer. Probably several people depending on the situation. One person that always comes to mind for me is Steve Jobs. In many terms he was certainly not inspirational but his visionary abilities and his relentless pursuit for perfection lives on even today.
Facts about the two recent joiners:
Education: B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering supported by business educations at BI in Norway and INSEAD in France.
Joining from a position in INEOS as Head of Supply Chain. Prior to that this; Head of Supply Chain in DONG Oil & Gas, which was sold off to INEOS in September 2017.
Education: MSc in Industrial Marketing & Purchasing from Copenhagen Business School, BSc in International Management.
Joining from Ørsted Wind Power A/S (former DONG Energy) serving as Head of Contract Management for offshore structures.
